My latest Dynasty/Keeper draft was finished the other day and I have to say I am pleased with how it turned out considering I didn't have picks in Rounds 3, 4 and 6.
Starters 2LW, 2C, 2RW, 4F, 5D, 2G (17) Standard scoring categories (G, A, SOG, +/-, W, SHO, GA, SV).
My 12 NHL + 5 rospect keepers were Matthews, Scheifele, Rakell, Hoffman, Eberle, Seth Jones, Krug, OEL and Sergachev. Murray, Vasilevskiy and Allen completed my pro keepers. I kept only 1 prospect TOR-D-Timothy Liljegren. Didn't have good prospects on my team which is unusually rare for me. In my other Dynasty league I had Sprong, Juolevi, Abramov, Steel and Demko. So my Defense and Goalies were set going in for the most part.
We draft until our roster is at 30, with 5 having to be prospects (less than 83 games for skaters and 41 for goalies).
Round 1, 3rd pick. Was hoping for Svechnikov (went 2nd) but also was targeting Mittelstadt or Pettersson. Took Mittlestadt. Pettersson went 2 after my pick. HAPPY.
Round 2, 8th pick. Was looking for another forward, and since I wasn't drafting for another 24 picks, I wanted to pick a solid wing with potential. Grabbed Travis Konecny from Philly. He should be playing on a line with Giroux and Couturier. I think he will have a good year, but then heard some others that really like him this year, which made my picking him easier. HAPPY.
On to Round 5...Best player time for the most part, and since not much was left on defense, I was hoping I'd start a defense and goalie run which would leave some decent forwards coming back since I only had my 5th round pick and no wrap around pick in the 6th round, having tosee 19 players come off the board before my next pick. I loved Reinhart there but since there were plenty of forwards and not many GOOD D-men left I decided to go D. (This is where the Tiers come in handy). Forwards still available were players like Saad on Chicago, Atkinson on CBS, and Ty Rattie which would have been maybe too early to pick him in the 5th round, and Hornqvist on Pitt maybe. All those I knew I could get later, or at least I was hoping to. I went with Duncan Keith, who should rebound this year. I only need a good year from him to round out my 5 starting defensemen to go with my 4 keepers mentioned aboce. SENSIBLE, since I got the D and G run I wanted after.
ROUND 7. Now I'm getting into the flow of things and got my desired defense and goalie run. Taken after my Keith pick in ROUND 5, (with Muzzin, Hart-G on PHI and Bouchard taken before my Keith selection), Schultz, Hanifin, Elliott, Fowler, Vatanen, Faulk, Nurse, Brodie, McDonagh all went before my next pick in the 7th Round where I selected Saad. HAPPY. I would've liked Fiala there as well but he was gone off the board.
ROUND 8 - Ty Rattie...I knew he'd get a shot with McDavid this pre-season and was so happy that our draft was before pre-season games because he looks like he is on a mission this year with 7 points in 2 games so far. VERY HAPPY.
ROUND 9: Veteran depth and a valuable Pitt player--Patric Hornqvist. Can't have too many young guys on a Dynasty team. You need some veteran depth to plug in from time to time. SOLID PICK.
ROUND 10: Potential rookie/prospect, Valentin Zykov on Carolina. Donato from Boston just went before I picked, but was happy to take Zykov there. Some of the 10 teams in the league were just about finishing up drafting as they completed their teams of 30, so it was either Zykov or go for defensive depth with Lindholm-ANA or Spurgeon-MIN but I took a chance that either one would be there on the turn. Calculated risk that paid off because of the Tier system. HAPPY.
ROUND 11- Got my D depth with Lindholm! So my base of a team was set with 9 picks left. Very happy getting Lindholm here. See ROUND 10 comments.
ROUND 12- Best available prospect with teams finishing drafting. Jordan Kyrou-STL Center may play a little this season but has lots of potential if not I can hold him as a prospect for next year. FUN PICK for me with 3 TEAMS DONE.
ROUND 13- 2 teams finished drafting and many others just about to pick their last selection so time to make the most of my remaining picks. I, along with others, are expecting lots of good things from Ondrej Kase from ANA. Much like Konecny, he fills a wing spot with loads of potential. HAPPY.
ROUNDS 14 & 15 - Now I need bench depth. Had Wennberg and Fabbri-STL targeted (Rebound candidate from injury last year), but both taken back-to-back at the other end. Was tickled to get Ondrej Palat and then Bryan Little on the turn. Couldn't believe Palat was still available. Another rebound candidate on a very good team and an injury away from being really relevant on TB. VERY HAPPY.
ROUND 16 - 5 teams remaining to draft. Paul Stastny added some more veteran depth to my team. Solid pick. Wanted to go young/prospect but I had enough now with the Kyrou, Rattie, Zykov and Mittelstadt picks. SOLID.
ROUNDS 17-20- Backup goalie time with Jarry-PIT, Johnson-STL and 2 F in Coyle in MIN (rebound candidate) and Okposo who may rebound playing with Jack Eichel who I expect to breakout this season. VERY PLEASED.
So there you have my latest dynasty draft. We expand our rosters to 33 come the first NHL weekend so will look for more depth on my bench or some NHL surprises this pre-season. I hoped you enjoyed my self-analysis. My team is called 16 Broncos, named for the casualties of the Humboldt Broncos accident.
